Machine Vision technology is playing a fundamental role in the fast growing Vision Guided Robotics sector, to the point where is it estimated that a machine vision camera and light will soon be standard as an EOAT (end of arm technology) on most industrial robots. Tasks for Vision Guided Robots can be broadly categorised into 2D part or feature location (eg: for picking and placing), and 3D part or feature location (eg: for extracting 3D information from a scene).
Within the Machine Vision system for Vision Guided Robotics, lighting is a key element. David L. Dechow of FANUC America Corporation comments that “..the machine vision process depends upon successful imaging, and that successful imaging is a function of lighting”. The video below illustrates an example of how Gardasoft lighting controllers and CCS lights are being integrated by FANUC in order to guarantee consistent, accurate and reliable lighting - all delivered whilst various illumination levels are being switched at high frequency throughout the application.
