Troubleshooting lighting controller Ethernet problems
One of the most popular application notes to be downloaded from Gardasoft’s download pages is APP923 Troubleshooting Ethernet Problems. This 8-page application note is designed to help the user troubleshoot common problems when connecting Gardasoft controllers to PC networks using the Ethernet interface. The connection could be a single direct connection (i.e. point-to-point) or an indirect connection using a Local Area Network (LAN).

The first section of the application note describes Wireshark, which is very useful for diagnosing Ethernet communication issues. The most common problems are a mismatch of IP addresses between a PC and a controller and Windows’ firewalls sometimes blocking Ethernet packets, so those are worth looking out for.
Some customers find that TCP communications are quite slow. This is because Windows imposes a 200ms delay which is not possible to avoid. However, Gardasoft has introduced improvements to the controllers' TCP stack, which have minimised other delays.
Gardasoft technical experts are always happy to help with more complex issues. Any technical questions can be submitted using the ‘Ask the expert’ tab at the bottom of this page.
